'MONSTERS' Selected by the artist Robert Longo, this diverse exhibition of 13 artists (all male) who were once his studio assistants reflects a healthy indifference to imitating or being imitated. Of particular interest are Nathan Spondike's luminous abstractions; Brock Enright's garrulous installation; Owen McAuley's small urban nocturnes; Colin Hunt's even smaller Surrealistic canvases; Garrick Imatani's photographs of off-the-grid dwellings; and Eric Schnell's patchwork of pale drawings, held together by clay. The most Longo-esque artist, William Latta, still manages to look like, well, his own man. Rental Gallery, 120 East Broadway, at Allen Street, Lower East Side, (212) 608-6002, rental-gallery.com, through Oct. 5.(Smith)
